A cabochon stone is one which has been shaped and polished rather than faceted.

The name of the garnet, of which there are many stories and legends including its ability to promote good health, is said to come from the Latin word ‘Garanatus’, meaning ‘seedlike’ in reference to a pomegranate. A necklace of garnets was found worn by the mummified body of a young Eygptian man, dating from around 3,500BC. Plato is said to have had his portrait engraved on a garnet by a Roman engraver. Evidence of the use of garnets for jewellery in the Bronze Age has been found and the Anglo-Saxons were also fond of the gemstones, using them in the attractive jewellery of the time. Bohemia was once a great source of garnets and stones from there are famous to this day. Grents were also once used as a talisman for protection both by warriors going into battle and those who wanted to ward off pestilence and plague.
Garnets come in a range of colours. It is the birthstone for January and the celebratory stone for the 2nd and 18th wedding anniversary.
